Some things about Wood carving;
Wood carving is one of the oldest arts performed.
Cave man shaped wood with fire and by scraping it with sharp stones to
make his primitive tools and some toys for their children even there food
was eaten on hand shaped wood plates.
Sailors carved whale bone to pass the time and for trade goods with
natives. The ornamentation carved on the ships they sailed gave good luck
and and a unique appearance so other ships could identify them. Sculptor's
have for thousands of years studied in wood. Some still today, prefer
to work with the verity and texture Wood has to offer.
Mold Makers of old made their molds from
wood by carving in reverse. Today many mold makers commission wood carvers
to do the original art work because of the quality and unique look woodcarving
gives the finished product
In
days of old on the big sails the phrase 3 squares a day came about from
meal time. Ship hands were served 3 times a day on a square plank of wood
they maintained themselves, many were hand carved in greatly ornate designs
and went from ship to ship with the sailor that owned it. Grog (warm rum)
was also served in a wooden mug. The sailors were also known to carve
designs in these mugs to identify them from their shipmates. The pirate
above now stands in a dingy and holds a mail box on his square platter.
He was inspired by the mail box that has the shape of a pirates chest
and is made of brass, he dwells in Seista Key, Florida and stands to welcome
the guests of the home owners and to protect their mail.
Some things you should know
about me (Harry Runkis) and this site.
If I make it to November 2007 I will be 59.
I painted most of my life and switched to carving full time in 1990 so every
thing I create is in color. I make my own stains and you can see the wood
grain through it very well. My colors are bright as I mix them with pure pigments.
I use Acrylic paints were there is color and Teak oil on the bases. All nontoxic.
By special request you can order anything in natural wood finish.
I carve most any living thing and some we just wish
were living. To list some: Pirates, Fisherman, Tikis, Totems, Sea captains,
Indians, Cowboys, boxers, soldiers, Salt water fish, freshwater fish, Pelicans,
Egrets, Cranes and to many more to mention. I use Cypress mostly but some
are carved from Cedar.
I ship most anything anywhere and most art
ships with UPS Unless it is big or heavy then I use other shippers.
